Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

The Wyvern Mystery

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s "The Wyvern Mystery" is a classic Gothic novel steeped in family secrets, forbidden love, and mounting terror. The story follows the beautiful and innocent Alice Maybell, a young orphan who has been raised as the ward of the elderly Squire Fairfield at the sprawling, rambling Wyvern Court. Alice is in love with the Squire’s younger son, Charles, and they secretly marry, an act which immediately incurs the wrath of the Squire, who disinherits Charles. The young couple is forced to flee to a remote and decaying dower house known as Carwell Grange. It is here that the true horror begins. The Grange is a place of sinister reputation, and Alice is left largely alone while Charles is away. She is tormented by the malevolent and grotesque housekeeper, Dulcina Crowl, and haunted by eerie nocturnal sounds and the apparition of a terrifying, pale-faced woman in a chamber known as the "Tapestry Room." Alice’s sanity and safety begin to unravel as she uncovers a dark history of murder, illegitimacy, and a previous bride who met a grim fate within the very same walls. Le Fanu masterfully builds a claustrophobic atmosphere of paranoia and dread, where the line between real threat and spectral haunting is blurred. The novel is a potent tale of a vulnerable heroine trapped in a web of ancestral sin and mortal danger, where the greatest mystery is not who, but what, is lurking in the shadows of Wyvern.
