„Unfaithful in the Alps”

Chapter 1. Arrival in Alpine Air

The cogwheel train chugged to a final, hissing stop, its antiquated metal body settling against the wooden platform with a groan that seemed to embody the weariness of its passengers. Stepping out into the sharp, crystalline air of Steinbach, Olivier Gilliéron felt the immediate bite of alpine winter against his cheeks—a welcome sensation after the stuffy warmth of the compartment they'd shared for the past two hours. His eyes, pale blue like a winter sky, instinctively sought out Fabienne beside him, her chestnut braid swinging as she navigated the salt-strewn boards with careful steps, and in that moment of shared disorientation, a familiar comfort bloomed between them—wordless and effortless.

"Mind the gap," Olivier called out, his calm baritone carrying over the mechanical wheezes and scattered conversations flooding the platform. He reached for Fabienne's elbow, steadying her as she maneuvered her wheeled suitcase over the uneven boards.

The platform was a pocket of cold chaos—the metallic tang of iron rails mingling with diesel fumes, creating that distinct aroma known to travelers everywhere. All around them, their Lausanne colleagues spilled from the train, their corporate precision temporarily undone by the mundane struggles of luggage and unfamiliar terrain.

Fabienne smiled up at Olivier, her dark brown eyes reflecting the crisp mountain light. "Always so gallant," she teased, but the warmth in her voice betrayed her appreciation. When his gloved hand brushed against hers—a fleeting, perhaps accidental touch—a silent current of understanding passed between them, an intimacy built on years of shared glances and unspoken thoughts.

From several paces behind them, Aline Favre adjusted her minimalist glasses with one precise finger, her sharp grey eyes narrowed not against the sunlight but in focused observation. Her platinum blonde bob remained perfectly still despite the mountain breeze as she watched Matteo Bernasconi effortlessly lift a ski case from an elderly woman's grasp. His warm smile—so easily given, so genuinely meant—triggered a cascade of calculations in Aline's analytical mind.

"Unnecessary exertion," she muttered to herself, "but effective social integration." Nevertheless, she couldn't help cataloging the way his burgundy sweater stretched across his shoulders, another data point in her long-held, methodically assembled crush.

The group trudged across the platform, breath fogging in the cold air, wheeled luggage clattering across the wooden slats, the mountain silence temporarily fractured by their urban intrusion. Above them, the formidable triple peaks of Mont de L'Aigle caught the morning sun, glowing with an ethereal blue that seemed almost otherworldly—indifferent to the human drama unfolding beneath.

"It's still exactly as I remember it," Fabienne whispered, her eyes lifting to the jagged horizon. "Like stepping into a postcard."

"Except the postcards don't mention frozen toes," Olivier responded, the corner of his mouth lifting in that particular half-smile she'd grown to anticipate. It was these small moments—the quiet jokes, the shared references—that formed the invisible threads binding them together.

The transition from the exposed platform to the cavernous, wood-paneled lobby of the Steinbacherhof Hotel was like stepping from one world into another. The sudden embrace of warmth was almost disorienting—a rich, complex heat that carried the scent of burning pine logs and hot wax, undercut with faint notes of cinnamon and aged wood. Massive exposed beams crossed the ceiling, their ancient surfaces carved with geometric patterns and stylized horses that seemed to gallop across the wood grain.

At the reception desk, the group was welcomed with steaming mugs of complimentary Glühwein—a January version, sans Christmas spices but still sweetly warming. Olivier took two mugs, passing one to Fabienne with a deliberate brush of fingers.

"Your braid," he said, lowering his voice to a private murmur as they moved away from the others. "It's perfect today. Too perfect. Did you count each strand?" His eyes crinkled at the corners with affection, the teasing familiar territory between them.

Fabienne's laugh was melodic but soft, meant only for him. "I'll have you know this precision takes talent." She patted the thick chestnut rope draped over her shoulder. "Some of us can't roll out of bed with artfully tousled hair like yours." Her fingers itched to reach up and comb through his perpetually mussed light brown strands, but she restrained herself, conscious of their colleagues milling about the lobby.

"It's not tousled, it's weathered," Olivier countered, taking a sip of the hot wine. "Dairy farm heritage. We're born looking slightly rumpled."

"And smelling of cheese?" She raised an eyebrow, the playful banter flowing between them.

"Only the finest Alpkäse." He winked, and Fabienne felt that familiar flutter beneath her ribs—that private storm that belonged to him alone.

From across the lobby, Jonas Aeschlimann observed their interaction, his bright blue eyes taking in the scene with the practiced assessment of a marketing strategist. He stood with his hands in the pockets of his fashionable navy ski jacket, leaning slightly forward as if perpetually ready to move toward the next opportunity. The way Olivier and Fabienne existed in their own bubble, seemingly unaware of the busy lobby around them, was both compelling and challenging to Jonas.

His thumb hovered over his phone's camera app—the perfect shot of the "authentic alpine couple" framed between antique snowshoes mounted on the wall—but he didn't take it. Instead, he slid the device back into his pocket, the expensive watch on his wrist catching the firelight as he did.

Jonas took a slow sip of his own Glühwein, the sweetness failing to mask a growing determination. What he saw in Fabienne wasn't just her graceful beauty or the elegant way she carried herself—though those certainly hadn't escaped his notice. It was something more elusive: an authenticity, a genuine quality that was increasingly rare in his curated world of marketing campaigns and strategic relationships. And the fact that she seemed so comfortably claimed by Olivier only heightened the challenge.

"You're staring," came a voice at his elbow. Matteo had approached silently, his own mug cradled between hands that bore the small, healed nicks of someone who worked with tools and not just keyboards.
