William Morris (1834 – 1896)

Fantasy, Socialism

william-morris

William Morris was a visionary British artist, poet, and socialist whose multifaceted career left an indelible mark on literature and design. A leading figure in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Morris rejected industrialism, advocating for handcrafted art and social reform. His fantasy novels, like The Wood Beyond the World, pioneered the genre with lush medievalism and proto-environmental themes. As a socialist, he wrote political essays and lectured on labor rights. Morris’s Kelmscott Press revived traditional bookmaking, influencing modern typography. His legacy endures in design, literature, and progressive politics, bridging art and activism.
