Augustus Le Plongeon (1826 - 1908)
Historical Fiction, Archaeology

Augustus Le Plongeon was a pioneering yet contentious figure in 19th-century archaeology, best known for his radical theories linking ancient Maya civilization to Egypt and Atlantis. Born in Jersey, he traveled extensively in Yucatán, documenting ruins and asserting that Mayan glyphs held transatlantic historical secrets. His works, like Queen Moo and the Egyptian Sphinx, were dismissed by scholars but captivated the public imagination. Despite criticism, his passion for Mesoamerican cultures influenced later pseudoarchaeology and alternative history. Le Plongeon’s legacy remains a blend of adventure, mysticism, and unverified claims.
